Last Days of the Loughrea Branch 3

Branch train arrived at Loughrea c 1975. Usual passenger accommodation on the train was one coach warmed by electric storage heaters which were plugged into the station overnight! On one famous occasion they forgot to unplug them before the train moved off -the result was set of heaters on the platform and a giant hole in the side of the coach. There after a non screw plug was utilised!

Customized sauna control

Customized sauna control

This control panel is ubiquitous with Saunas manufactured by Helo, a british company. For safety reasons, the control panel features a timer that limits time in the sauna to about an hour, but interestingly, the timer knob has been removed and replaced with a toggle switch. Perhaps that is why the sign above the control panel reads, "please do not touch controls, ask attendant for assistance." Another thing that is kind of unusual about this panel is that it indicates that the light and heat circuits used different voltages. According to an imprint on the panel, the lights used standard 120V service, but the heater was wired to two hot leads in a split single phase configuration, providing up to 40A @ 240V.

Stardate 20081126

I am COLD.

Our utility bill is out of control. I'm one of these people that could live in a sauna and I need to retrain myself - you know, to actually use my clothes to keep warm instead of electricity. So we still haven't turned the heater on this year - I want to see how good I can be by dressing warmer inside before we fire up the furnace. Jury's out.

Maybe this cold house is the reason I'm finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning.

My Compost Bin

My Compost Bin

We have had two of these bins for about 10 years now. They don't have a bottom and do quite well at making compost. I had both of them near the house for the last couple of years and noticed that the moisture level was getting a little too high. So I built a couple of stands out of scrap wood. I picked up some hot water heater drain pans to stick underneath. Now every week or so, I have some perfect compost tea for my potted plants and the surrounding ground and bin stays a bit dryer.

Water alarm inside of drain pan

Water alarm inside of drain pan

As mentioned in a previous picture, my "drain pan to nowhere" has a purpose after all. Should water leak from the tank or pipes, this handy dandy battery-operated screeching alarm will alert me that moisture is present, if I'm home to hear it. I also keep one of these by my washer.
